OUR HISTORY
In 1983, the Adult Education Group in Young ran genealogy classes that sparked a new interest in family history for many participants. Inspired by this, a small group of enthusiasts decided to form their own genealogy organization. In August 1983, the Young & District Family History Group Inc. was officially established, with Ann Bell serving as President alongside committee members Janice Ward, Neil Gow, Robin Crawford, and Allen Crowe. These pioneers worked tirelessly to secure a suitable research centre and raise funds to purchase essential resources.
Over the years, the Group has called several locations home. It began with two rooms at the Lambing Flat Museum, then moved to a space in Schmidt’s Chambers on Main Street. Later, it relocated to the old school’s amenities block below the museum that was renovated by the Young & District Family History Group Inc. After 16 years there, the Group outgrew the space and moved to its current location in the Margaret Newcombe Room at the Young Community Arts Centre, 2 Campbell Street Young.
